January 2019

The whirlwind of the holiday season is officially behind us.  A time for a little nostalgia perhaps?  I like to reflect back on all the festivities, family and friends entertained and visited, memories made.  Such a wonderful and full time of year.  Then, in slips quiet January.  Personally, (I have mentioned this before) I don’t like the pressure of “New Years” resolutions.  Instead, I like to think of things I may want to accomplish sometime along the way, perhaps sign up for that cooking class I’ve often thought about.  If it happens, great! If not, no worries, I’ll attempt it another time.  I am a firm believer that everything happens in it’s appropriate time.  We just have to be open to the challenges and opportunities that come our way.  This January marks the one year mark that my blog was officially web-optimized and it has been a learning and growing process all along the way.  It was a challenge and one I welcomed.  I hope you are enjoying it.  Each new year opens new opportunity for personal growth.  Make this your year and make every day great!  Happy New Year to you all.

March 2018

Here in the northeast March is definitely coming in like a lion with a nor’easter expected to drop several inches of heavy wet snow.  March can be such a tease, one week sunshine and warmth hinting of the long awaited spring to come and the next…..well, snow and even snowstorms.  Whether you like snow and cold or loathe it, you can bank on March to be the last month for consistent winter weather.  While out for my morning walk the other day, I noticed that familiar clatter that made no mistake the red-winged blackbirds and starlings were back in town.  Slowly, the air is filling with our summer inhabitants and I always welcome their song and busy-ness.  Although it is not quite spring yet, March does allow us to think forward to the warm days ahead and our anticipated projects, gardens, vacations and such.  So while we are still primarily indoors, flip through the blog and perhaps try a new recipe or tackle a small project such as starting seeds indoors.  Make your spring to-do list and know that April is just around the corner.  Also, be sure to check out my Irish Soda Bread recipe.  It is a recipe given to me by a dear friend and I can assure you, it is absolutely delicious!

September

A year ago, I entered my first ever blog post.  As the leaves gradually hint of their grand show to come, once again, so many changes in life as well.  This year many of my friends are seeing children off to college for the first time.  In light of that, I am re-posting my first ever entry.  To all my friends and parents everywhere…….

Well it only seems fitting that I have launched my blog/website in September, this month that truly heralds the start of so many beginnings.  If you are a parent you are used to September being full of new beginnings, new firsts.  The bittersweet heartache of watching your children step onto a school bus for the first time, or the last, moving off to college or asking for the keys as they slip behind the wheel to drive themselves to school.  Another school year, another fresh start, a clean slate.

There is a certain stillness in the mornings too that gently heralds the change to come.  It is as though nature has taken a collective breath holding onto the last of summers’ sweetness only to finally exhale into autumn.

Roadside stands are brimming with produce, tomatoes, squash of every kind and…..the true symbol of early fall….pumpkins.

In this month I will try to inspire you with fall decor, bringing some of the last of that ‘outdoorness’ inside.  Look for recipes for the last of the summer bounty and some ideas of what to do on those less than perfect days – organizing, cleaning out a closet, maybe a project to tackle.

Time to get out the sweaters and embrace the season.  Welcome to Home.

It’s Party Season – tips for successful entertaining

In my blog entry “Make Thanksgiving Stress Free”, I give many of my tried and true entertaining tips that bear repeating. Basically, as with everything, pre-planning is everything.   If you are having a holiday party, large or small, any or all of these tips will be beneficial for having your party run smoothly.

Have a designated closet or space for coats.  Preferably not right at your entrance, so as to avoid a cluttered look.  Rent or purchase a rolling coat rack, or clear out your hall closet of your own coats, so as to provide ample space for your guests.  Be sure to add hangers.

Clear out your refrigerator of any excess food, condiments, etc., so as to make room for large platters (that you have made in advance) and also for the leftovers that will be going in after the party.

Prepare as much of your food as you can in advance.  Have it ready to be placed in the oven or on the buffet in it’s serving container.

Empty the dishwasher so it is on the ready for loading day/night of your event

Look around, do you have enough seating?  This depends on the type of event you are throwing, naturally if it is a dinner you need chairs for your guests.  If you are throwing a cocktail party, I have found the majority of people stand or walk around having conversations.  Still, have seating in conversational groupings.  Many people make the mistake of removing too much furniture, you will need small tables here and there as a landing place for a drink or small plate.  If you must, re-arrange your living room furniture to accomodate.

If you have a fireplace, make sure the wood bins are full.  Have the logs stacked and ready to light.  You don’t want to be running around looking for newspaper minutes before your guests arrive.  Light the fireplace at least 1/2 hour prior to your event.  It could be just that night that the flue decides not to draft!  At least you can resolve that before anyone shows up!

Lighting is everything.  Lamps and candles help to set the mood.  Avoid bright overhead lighting unless it is a chandelier with a dimmer.  I always like to have a candle in the powder room, but avoid having them close to the bar or at the buffet.  And try not to have scented candles close to your food.

Be sure that there are ample hand towels in the powder room.  I like to use decorative paper hand towels, that way each guest has a clean dry towel. Always have at least an extra roll of toilet paper in a container or under the vanity.  Place a fresh new bar of soap in the soap dish or use a pump dispenser but again, make sure it is new and full.

Set the mood with music, but keep the volume from becoming overwhelming.

Have your entrances well lit and be prepared for winter weather by keeping shovels and salt handy if needed.

My children love to help at parties, and truthfully, they are quite good at it.  My son usually helps to direct with parking, shoveling walks and hanging coats.  My daughters clear away plates and work the buffet and loading dishwashers.  If you can’t hire a caterer, I suggest hiring a freind’s son or daughter for help – I have found that they are always more than happy to help out, plus they earn a little spending money!

And finally, always, always greet your guests.  Do not be upstairs fixing your hair as your guests show up.  You want to exude effortlessness and hospitality.  This instantly makes your guests feel welcome.   Let the festivities begin!

Important Fall Garden Advice!

I refer to my garden-blogger companions to give their sage advice, and I am constantly amazed at how much more information there is out there.  Here are some terrific tips that came from the empressofdirt.net.

Fall garden tasks are often ignored as we instinctively retreat to the indoors as the weather turns colder, letting the garden fade out.

However, if you can muster the enthusiasm/long johns, the payoff is quite fabulous: healthier plants and soil, gorgeous spring bulbs, masses of fresh garlic in the new year, productive bees, and more.

I hope you’ll find some helpful ideas as well as some new favourite blogs to follow.

Let’s get started with healthy soil. Here’s a few ideas:

1. Pine Needle Mulch | Our Fairfield Home & Garden

  • Pine needles make wonderful garden mulch. Organic mulches serve several purposes: they protect the soil during the winter, provide habitat for worms and friends (lots of insects and beneficial bacteria), and gradually break down to add structure and enrich the soil.
  • There’s a common gardening myth that the acidity of pine needles is harmful for a garden. Not true! By the time the needles break down, the acid level is insignificant, and there’s plenty of goodness in there.
  • See more of Barb’s tips on Tucking In The Winter Garden here….

2. Cover Crops | Learning & Yearning

  •  Cover crops are plantings used to protect and enrich the soil. You may have noticed farmers using these crops on their fields during the winter. The plants are not actually harvested for consumption but instead are incorporated into the soil, the same way we add compost.
  • Cover crops can be planted in the home garden with the same benefits.
  • Susan is experimenting both with cover crops and a no-dig garden method for super healthy soil. Find out which cover crop she’s using here: Cover Crop In A No-Dig Garden….

3. Leaves Are Gold In The Garden | Empress of Dirt

  • Somehow this crazy tradition started where we rake up leaves, bag them, ship them away, and then buy the equivalent soil enricher in the spring.
  • Leaves are actually an incredible resource, providing free mulch for the garden with no shipping involved. Smart and free!
