March 2017

“Is it spring yet??”

So many things can be said for March…. The beginning to the end (of winter that is), the luck of the Irish, etc.  While it is always nice to know we are that much closer to April, make no mistake, despite the rash of warm days we have been having, winter still has it’s icy grip on the northeast.  This really is our final month of winter (even though we can easily entertain snow in April), for me it is always bittersweet. March is very much like August, hanging on to the last of those finest of days, knowing the end is inevitable before we have to embrace the next season. Our weekend warrior skiing days will come to an end and with that we say goodbye to our mountain friends until we meet again in November.  We will hang up the skis and put away the snowshoes and begin to think about warmer weather pursuits.  Whatever your definition of March, like time itself, it is fleeting.

March 2022

It seems as if I just posted my February intro and here we are welcoming March already! As much as many are a little winter weary and ready for spring, I stick true to my mantra, that all seasons are wonderful and rushing through one to get to the other only hastens our moments, our days and our lives. It’s true we have had a very cold winter so far, and for us in the Northeast, there’s still a bit to go, however it’s the subtle changes in nature that bring me joy.  The days are lengthening, mornings are brighter and I’ve seen and heard more song birds. This subtle change is remarkable to witness. Just the way, once again, the sun as it changes it’s position in the sky, fills my kitchen with it’s bright afternoon light. I am feeling the need for growing things so I’ve been bringing some potted flowers such as hellobores and cyclamen into the house. I’ve also been starting to think of some new spring fashion.  All little steps towards what will be inevitable. But for now, I’m just going to savor the still quiet winter, because what also comes with Spring is my to-do list with all the projects and such that will need attention and truthfully, I’m not ready to get that busy quite yet.  Happy March my friends!

May 2019

Welcome to May! As I write this, a bird is singing persistently outside. I know it is trying to attract it’s mate and start the endless life cycle. Nature at its’ finest.  I love all the seasons, but something about those early mornings (if you’re a morning person, I suppose), the exuberant bird song and smell of the earth re-awakening makes me stop and take a deep breath and marvel at the yearly re-birth.  It also makes me want to slow down time a bit. Take it all in. Spring, like Autumn, can be so fleeting.  Blossom, so eagerly awaited, gone so quickly, yet always so appreciated.  Life goes swiftly, I find myself saying this more and more often.  Seems so cliché, but facts cannot be denied. My injury has forced me to slow down, and in some strange way, I am learning to embrace it. I am typically an over motivated personality – type A, but learning to accept what was dealt my way  is another life re-set (again!! I’ve had several).  And on we go, like the little bird singing outside my window, persistence and acceptance prevail.  So, like myself, try to slow down here and there.  Enjoy the simple beauty of a quiet moment, the rustle of the just emerged leaves in a gentle breeze and the simple song of a little bird.

Here in the northeast March is definitely coming in like a lion with a nor’easter expected to drop several inches of heavy wet snow.  March can be such a tease, one week sunshine and warmth hinting of the long awaited spring to come and the next…..well, snow and even snowstorms.  Whether you like snow and cold or loathe it, you can bank on March to be the last month for consistent winter weather.  While out for my morning walk the other day, I noticed that familiar clatter that made no mistake the red-winged blackbirds and starlings were back in town.  Slowly, the air is filling with our summer inhabitants and I always welcome their song and busy-ness.  Although it is not quite spring yet, March does allow us to think forward to the warm days ahead and our anticipated projects, gardens, vacations and such.  So while we are still primarily indoors, flip through the blog and perhaps try a new recipe or tackle a small project such as starting seeds indoors.  Make your spring to-do list and know that April is just around the corner.  Also, be sure to check out my Irish Soda Bread recipe.  It is a recipe given to me by a dear friend and I can assure you, it is absolutely delicious!

A Breezy Screened-in Porch

Years ago, I used to dislike this rattan furniture, but as everything old is new again and rattan furniture, especially vintage rattan furniture, has become extremely desirable, so has my new found love for it!  I had it refinished in the spring and it looks brand new.  New cabana striped cushions and a glass top for the table which originally had a formica top give it a classic yet updated feel.  What makes this room work?  The repeat of the orange color, from rug, to accent pillows to the tray on the table.  Things don’t always have to be matchy matchy, as long as one color or theme is repeated here and there, the look will be complete.
